Increasing the information capacity of digital images in telecommunication systems

Project Summary:

Nowadays a lot of digital images are used in different areas of life. For example, almost every mobile device has an embedded photo camera that is mostly used just to make photos. It’s well known that digital images have some special properties ordinary used in compression algorithms. All compression systems use statistical and psychophysitial redundancy of digital images. In many cases (medicine databases with X-ray photos, private photo alboms, etc.) we need additional information about choosen images. It’s possible to solve this task by adding some additional information to initial images and using it by request. This information should be added while creating the image. This information may contain date, place, name of the person , etc. This information shouldn’t cause visible distortions to the image and shouldn’t be accessible for unauthorized user. Some of this information may be obtained automatically by mobile device (place - by GPS; time-by onboard clock, etc.), and some could be added by user.

Project goals and future research directions:

Short-term goals To make an overview of modern digital image models. To make an overview of modern telecommunication systems where digital mages could be used (for example, mobile systems). To analyze modern methods and chose the most appropriate and effective method to increase information capacity of the digital images (formatted and unformatted methods for additional information embedded). To analyze recent methods and chose the most appropriate and effective method for protection of embedded information against random errors and unauthorized access. Long-term goals To investigate new approaches and methods to increase information capacity for digital images in telecommunication systems by using and combining their features. To realize a modeling program of such methods, to research them. To make a research of security and safety problems in such schemes. Research Directions Investigation of the less significant areas of images for embedding additional information. Investigation the methods for protection of embedded information against random errors. Using error-correcting codes with unequal error protecting property for more effective usage of image redundancy for additional information embedding. Investigation methods for access control of embedded information.
