Information security of healthcare systems, using biometric approach

Background and Motivation:

As information technologies develop, there appear more and more medical devices for diagnosis of human condition and maintenance of life-support. Personal medical information, which process in such devices has the highest level of privacy according to international standard HL7 and Russian legislation. During the operation of medical electronic devices should respect the principles of CIA triads, so that personal medical data can be protect using standard methods of information security namely methods of access control and data encryption. Biometric technology using heart sounds and acoustic characteristics of the circulatory system allows constructing flexible informational security systems, adapted to the specific characteristics of medical electronic devices. Unlike other biometric technologies, system of human authentication using heart sounds does not required active data input and provides reliability of work of system. Also the acoustic characteristics of the circulatory system allow developing a common key for the symmetric cryptosystems.

Project Summary:

Human authentication during work with the device is one of the ways for information security. The possibility to pass authentication procedure without user’s actions is one of importance feature of medical devices. An authentication method providing such possibility is authentication using human heart sound signals. The use of heart signals as the authentication method is possible because of melody in heart sound signals which is typical for every person. This feature was revealed during studying the heartbeats sound signal spectrum. Standard speech recognition algorithms were applied in this approach, also taking into account heartbeat sound specificity.

Authentication mechanism using heart sounds consists of three important parts:

  • Creating and working with database
  • Extracting individual characteristic of heartbeat sound signal
  • Creating classification of individual characteristic for making a decision

Also the acoustic characteristics of the circulatory system allow developing a common key for the symmetric cryptosystems. Such acoustic characteristics of the circulatory as human heart sounds and inter-pulse interval are using in order to receive groups of similar random numbers to encrypt and decrypt the symmetric key.

Project goals and future research directions:
